I can not stand first person fiction books. When I see a book is first person, I put it back on the electronic shelf. Another turn off for me is Oprah recommended books. Shhhh, don’t tell her. I’ve read a few and most of those were misses for me. So when my book club chose An American Marriage, I went in with doom and gloom, ready to take one for the team.
Well, I am so grateful for my book club for choosing this book. In the book you have a young couple, married a little over a year and in love. Then the husband is sentence to over a decade in jail for a crime the wife knows he did not commit. The plot was compelling but the author’s writing style was what won me over. Yep, you heard it here first. Hats off to the author.
This book did have unanswered questions, but they weren’t supposed to be answered. The novel focused on the relationship between the couple and their struggles to deal with the situation they were placed in, which I liked. I’ll watch Law and Order if I want courtroom drama. IJS….
For those of you, like me, who give an automatic “no thanks” to first person books, I hope you give this one a try. You won’t be sorry.
