Born a Crime by Trevor Noah is a perfect example of why I love book clubs. Belonging to a book club has made me read many a title I wouldn’t have considered reading. Don’t get me wrong. I read nonfiction, but I knew nothing about Trevor Noah outside of he is a comedian and I’d seen a few clips from The Daily Show. I had no idea he had written a book.
Anywhooo, when I read the blurb about the book, I was like, “Oh no, a depressing book about apartheid in South Africa. At least he’s a successful person, so it won’t be all bad.” I know, I’m a horrible person, but there you have it. Now that I’ve read the book, I believe everyone should and it should be assigned to high school classes. This is how history should be taught. I found Born a Crime extremely entertaining and educational. Reading the book felt like watching an amazing movie. I’m going to order the audio because it’s the closest I can get to turning the black and white movie in my mind into full color.
My favorite aspect of his story is actually his mother. An incredible woman, she was the star of the movie in my mind. Extremely religious, yet progressive in many ways, she refused to be held back by the chains of apartheid. You know how people say if you could have someone over for dinner to pick their brain, who would it be? Well, Trevor Noah’s mother would be the person I picked. Read the book, folks, and you’ll see what I mean.
